Misal pav is Pune’s favourite breakfast. Spicy usal, crunchy farsan, hot tarri and soft pav. Every area of the city has its own famous shop.
I checked more than 20 misal places in Pune. Rating, reviews, timing, price, everything. These 10 are the best ones, with full details so you know exactly where to go and when.
Katakirr Misal
The most famous misal in Pune. Kolhapuri style, red and oily, with three spice levels. Tikhat is seriously hot, so take medium if you are new. You get a token and wait for your number. Order matki base with cold mattha. Go on a weekday morning, weekends are very crowded.
Bedekar Misal
Running for about 75 years. Mild misal with a light sweet taste, served with bread slices instead of pav. Best choice if you cannot eat very spicy food. Their kharvas is a must try. Closed on Monday and closes early on Sunday, so check before you go.
Shrimant Misal Aani Barech Kahi
Highest rated place on this list. The seating is under bamboo and trees, very peaceful. You get a full thali with matki, farsan, tarri, taak and shengdana ladoo. Pav and tarri are unlimited. Spice is medium. Best option if you are going with family. Two wheeler parking only.
ShriKrishna Bhuvan
Old style shop inside Tulshibaug market. Self service, small seating and around 20 minutes wait on Sunday. Misal is made with poha, shev and potato, served with bread. Taste is sweet and tangy, not very spicy. They adjust the spice if you ask. Closed on Monday.
Bhadait Misal
Very close to Katakirr but the taste is more homestyle and balanced. The thali comes with 4 pav, farsan, matki, tarri, papad, taak and a shengdana ladoo. The ladoo and kanda bhaji are excellent. Eat there, do not order online. Delivery orders get a lot of complaints.
Aaba Misalwale (Shri Kala Snacks)
Many Punekars quietly rate this as the best misal in the city. Small shop, self service, morning queue. Spicy with very good masala taste. Tell them spicy or medium at the counter. Extra onion, sev and pav are charged. Eat there only, parcel taste is different. Closed on Wednesday.
Jogeshwari Misal
The only good option if you want misal at night. Most Pune misal shops close by 6 PM but this one stays open till around 10 PM. Red spicy rassa with soft pav. Order the special thali with solkadhi or taak. The Dhayari branch has better seating and parking.
Ramnath Misal (Hotel Ramnath)
Old Kolhapuri style shop with only 4 or 5 tables. Thick rassa, heavy oily kat and shev instead of mixed farsan. Old customers still love it, but recent reviews report off days and too much oil. Try it if you are already near Tilak Road, not worth a long trip.
Vaidya Upahar Gruha
More than 100 years old and totally different from every other misal here. The rassa is green, not red, and very mild. Made with potato, green chivda and thick sev, served with bread. Also try the tea, shira and kharvas. It runs in two shifts and is closed on Saturday.
Shree Uphar Gruh
Tiny shop with only 10 to 12 seats but very fast service. Classic Puneri misal with matki, poha, potato and chiwda, served with bread. Light sweet start and you can get the spice adjusted. Tarri is unlimited. Their poha and sabudana khichdi are also good. No parking, no washroom.
